MOMENTUM ART TECH X CHUCK D

Helping out our friends down at Momentum Art Tech i helped shoot some photos and some video on the first day of this two day process. It was pretty bad ass to say the least send it to all your friends and show our friends down at momentum as well as myself some support.

BY THE TIME I GET TO ARIZONA mural project is a collaboration of several artists throughout the country. This mural, as executed by the Momentum Art Team over a period of two days, is located in a Chicago Westside neighborhood. Their goal was to recreate Chuck D's venture into the fine art medium for everyone to see. Chuck D, working in conjunction with Scenefour Art Collective, used this project to focus on the problems associated with ill-conceived immigration policies in Arizona. Watch as Momentum Art completely translates this message on a large scale.

Rude DC5 Interview

Here is an unfinished interview with the man who showed me the ropes when i first became interested in the graff game. Although its unfinished i thought i'd share it with you guys.

I met rude dc5 for the first time at the meeting of styles in 2006. Soon after he gave me the opportunity to hang out with him as well as a few others from his crew. He taught me the fundamentals of graff and told me it should never be about the fame but the art. His advice has been invaluable to me. He told me to learn my history and respect those who came before me. Through this man i have a greater appreciation of graffiti.

This was the first permission wall i was asked to flick. The first time i was a able to see a wall being painted from start to finish.

MN- How did DC5 originate?

Rude: Well, My run with Aerosoul was coming to an end, and i wasnt happy (no diss to them) I had been wanting to do my own thing for a long time. Ever since i heard the military alert levels (DefCon 12345), I always new that DEFCON 5 would make a great name. The levels went from 5 to 1, 5 being peace or everythings cool to 1 full nuculear war... It was my intention way back in the day, that if the crew had gotten into any beefs, we could change the levels to become DefCon 4,3,2,1 depending on the severity of the situation... I thought it was a dope idea, Anyway, I knew i wanted to start my own thing, and I had a name to back it....Now i needed to recruit. My Idea was to start with guys, who had talent but weren't getting shots at the big crews...SHRED was my first recruit, Shred was in DOT crew, and he used to do fill ins all over the exspressways.... Green fills with green outlines....WTF! dude had mad heart but that shit needed to pop off...so i asked around, nobody knew him....Badnewz told me shred use to stop in his airbrush shop from time to time, and he set it up for us to meet. We met in a grocery parking lot, me by myself, and him with all his DOT crew friends, All he knew was i was looking for him, I guess thats why he brought his crew. But i pulled him to the side, i explained to him, i had been seeing his stuff, and i wanted to start a new crew, but i had a catch, he needed to drop his crew, and be DC5 and DC5 alone...it didnt sit well with him at first, I told him to go for a ride with me, i explained i was gonna drop AEROSOUL, and i wanted to direct all my efforts to 1 new crew. I drove up to the old DESPLAINES wall, downtown. We did a DC5 fill that day, best i can remember ...summer 91...

Current members..... I cant say enough about the DC5 rollcall... Each member past , present,and future will always be family to me, Each one has hightened the crew in there own way, When i left graff for about 8 years, These brothers kept the crew alive, and took it to world wide levels...pushed styles, colors,characters,productions, but most of all, Kept DC5 in legendary status in Chicago . Its in the books, nobody can take that away. DC5 will always be a top named crew in Chicago. I was very lucky to have a crew to come back too, let alone a crew with that kind of status.

While there are child molesters, rapist, and murders out on the street. They are put in the general population in prison for hurting nothing but a neglected surface that no one cared about until this person came along added a little color to it. So while there's cats getting decapitated and mutilated south of the border our countries biggest fear is cats catching wreck on brick and steel.

MN1- Whats up yo, we have known each other for a few of years now and I think this interview has been long over due. Recently you helped me out with a shoot I was doing for a project which turned out to be really great.

Saro- Yea helping you out with the project was cool; I like doin stuff for people in school. I think that they (school) don't really touch on graffiti and certainly not street art. I've also always wanted to go to college or art school rather, to get some kind of direction and easier methods of doing the things I do...

MN1-here are the flicks from that shoot

MN1-where are you from and what do you write?

Saro- anyway I'm born on Chicago’s north side and I go my the name Saro. I started playin around with graffiti in high school...writing Fetus haha, and that was around '99. I got in trouble for writing shortly after starting in school. What happened was, in gym class we were to climb the rock wall and as a prize or whatever, we were givin sharpies to write our initials on this wall just below the ceiling along with every graduating classes before us to prove we did it. Being a lazy, procrastinate asshole, I was last. My teacher said he'd fail me and yadda yadda yadda, so I climbed the wall super quick and busted out my jumbo pilot marker and wrote fetus about a foot tall and 2ft long in thick blue letters. The whole time I was getting screamed at by the coach, sayin that “years and years of traditions are down the drain because you want to be an asshole!" Haha that was awesome. I didn't do shit after that

MN1-When did you become part of the graffiti/street art scene and who were some of your influences.

Saro- Graff wasn't that interesting to me until my A.D.D. set in, and that was winter of 05 when I started writing saro. Artists that influence me still to this day are choke, Jackson Pollock, temper, stomach, 80s pop culture, horror movies, 7ist, taboo things and things that make the general public uneasy like... pentagrams! And yes...even (at times) the grimiest of em all, Viking. I think if you keep some of these guys in mind, and look at my stencil work and backgrounds, you can see some Pollack, choke and vike in em...but def with my own flavor on em.

MN1- You have been a part of the Chicago street art scene for a number of years what keeps you going?

Saro- Yea I guess I have been involved in this "scene" awhile. Its cool seeing artists come and go. Crazy talk, hellfire, lost, magicats, and even orkid. Those are some people you don't even see up anymore, but there are some bad aspects of being around for awhile. Because then you have to see things like don't fret and that dude that does the Blago stencils...ugh, haha. I'm sure they're good kids I just don't care for em and it seems a lot of other artists don't really like em either. Anyway, what keeps me going is progression. We all progress...eventually. So it’s like wine. Things get better with age ya know? Street art and graff is like this, it’s all been done before so its all about who can eat and swallow what's been done and regurgitate some hot shit.

MN1- There are alot of different mediums out there, are there any in particular that you like best??

Saro- My fav thing is boards for sure, then stickers. I wish this was the type of town we can run around with the stencil in hand and can of paint and stencil directly to surface but we can’t really. But yea, boards for the win.

MN1- I notice you have a website called artbysaro.com, is this a place where people can buy your work or even hire you to create custom work?

Saro- Artbysaro.com is def the place to pick up whatever you might want. And as I get more time, ill be updating it more frequently. Yea custom work seems to be the most favorite thing, I get a good amount of custom requests, whether its photo or stencil work.

MN1- Can you tell us a little about "The World Record Postal Combo Project." It has been going on for a little while now and I am curious to know if the end might be in sight any time soon and can you tell the readers how to get a hold of you if they want to participate.

Saro- Haha the world record postal combo project. Yea that's this sticker project I started a few years ago. What I wanted to do is take one usps postal sticker from each artist out there and put up a giant ass sticker combo here in the chi. I think it'd be sick to see over a thousand artists all at once on the street. Kinda like uniting graff and street artists from all over. I want at least 1000 stickers and I'm pretty close...maybe like 850artists? There's a flickr group www.flickr.com/groups/streetarthistory dedicated to the (slow) progress of the group. People that haven't sent me a sticker can get the address by getting in contact with me either via flickr, email, or my site, be ready for a few questions to make sure I don't smell bacon. We hope to be done with the collecting part of the project by spring, and then we can start getting things ready for a full color book and art show. It’s going to be sick man, giant combo, art show, and a book?? It'll be bananas

Grime Time Magazine Release Party

Chicago's own Grime Time Magazine will hold a release party this Sunday at Black Market Caviar. Featuring interviews, articles, and photographs documenting Chicago's graffiti scene, issue #3 is their biggest one yet.

The party will also feature a show of new photography by Ghetto P, the publisher of Grime Time. There'll also be live painting by Brooks Golden, and the release of a Grime Time t-shirt as well as prints by some great artists including PROVE, THOR, FACT, and MELON. I'm looking forward to this show.

i know alot of you guys like your I-Phones but they seem to carry alot more information then the average phone with all those apps and tracking BS in them. The last thing i want is a nosey pig stickin his snout in my fuckin business. Aside from being an invasion of privacy its not ok to allow any police officer or any other official without a warrant. So think twice before your i-phone puts you in the cell. Learn your rights!

Detective Josh Fazio of the Will County Sheriff's Department loves it when an iPhone turns up as evidence in a criminal case.

The sophisticated cell phone and mobile computer is becoming as popular with police as it is with consumers because it can provide investigators with so much information that can help in solving crimes.

"When someone tells me they have an iPhone in a case, I say, 'Yeah!' I can do tons with an iPhone," said Fazio, who works in the sheriff's department high-tech crimes unit.

The iPhones generally store more data than other high-end phones -- and investigators such as Fazio frequently can tap in to that information for evidence.

And while some phone users routinely delete information from their devices, that step is seldom as final as it seems.

"When you hit the delete button, it's never really deleted," Fazio said.

The devices can help police learn where you've been, what you were doing there and whether you've got something to hide.

Former hacker Jonathan Zdziarski, author of iPhone Forensics (O'Reilly Media) for law enforcement, said the devices "are people's companions today. They organize people's lives."

And if you're doing something criminal, something about it is probably going to go through that phone:

• Every time an iPhone user closes out of the built-in mapping application, the phone snaps a screenshot and stores it. Savvy law-enforcement agents armed with search warrants can use those snapshots to see if a suspect is lying about whereabouts during a crime.

• iPhone photos are embedded with GEO tags and identifying information, meaning that photos posted online might not only include GPS coordinates of where the picture was taken, but also the serial number of the phone that took it.

• Even more information is stored by the applications themselves, including the user's browser history. That data is meant in part to direct custom-tailored advertisements to the user, but experts said some of it could be useful to police.

Clearing out user histories isn't enough to clean the device of that data, said John B. Minor, a member of the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners.

Just as users can take and store a picture of their iPhone's screen, the phone itself automatically shoots and stores hundreds of such images as people close out one application to use another.

"Those screen snapshots can contain images of e-mails or proof of activities that might be inculpatory or exculpatory," Minor said.

• The keyboard cache logs everything that you type in to learn autocorrect so that it can correct a user's typing mistakes. Apple doesn't store that cache very securely, Zdziarski contended, so someone with know-how could recover months of typing in the order in which it was typed, even if the e-mail or text it was part of has long since been deleted.

Sometimes, the phones can help even if the case isn't a matter of life or death.

In Kane County, the sheriff's department used GPS information from one of the phones to help reunite a worried father with his runaway daughter, who was staying at a friend's house.

"His daughter felt comfortable at the house because she did not think her parents knew where she was, and she actually answered the door. She was a bit surprised as to the fact that [her] dad found her," said Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesman for the sheriff's department.

Living in a city like Chicago there is alot of urban decay. Factories and buildings that were part of an economic boom back in the day. Today those empty buildings scattered throughout the different neighborhoods of the city that are waiting to get the wrecking ball. While many see these places as an eyesore, Matt see's as an opportunity to document and preserve the Chicago of yesteryear. If it was not for people like Matt, there would be no record of many of these buildings that we take for granted. With the rise of "cookie cutter houses and condos" springing up in Chicago it is only a matter of time before the past is erased by generic houses and glass buildings.

His explorations are not just isolated to Chicago but also surrounding Midwest states.

while watching the documentary The MC: Why We Do it, last night i noticed that as common was speaking about where he came from a photo of a Chicago writers fill came up. That writer was Diel Kym. I almost fell out of my seat when i noticed that.

Here's a screen shot of common with the fill behind him.

While walking in downtown i notice that on the cover of a Newcity Newspaper was the Dtek water tower. I stopped in my tracks and picked up a copy. The article was about the wheat silos in Chicago.It had nothing to do with graffiti but a great find nonetheless..

Cameras make Chicago most closely watched US city

As technology takes over our lives privacy almost becomes non-existent. Chicago police camera adorn our light poles on our city streets. What good is a camera if no one is watching the live feed? Does it matter that it was caught on video? Maybe in court but the reality is the crime still happened with or without the camera.

Many people agree that these camera's are for our own safety. When i walk around the city catching photographs it is the exact opposite somehow myself and other photographers are viewed as a threat.Why i do not know. Maybe it is because just like the watchers can watch us, we can also watch the watchers. I for one do not agree with being watched every minute of every day.If we allow them to take over our streets with camera's for our own good. We will soon see them in our homes to protect us not from intruders but from ourselves.

There is approximately 10,000 cameras that are networked together in the city but since 2006 they have only been able to make 4,000 arrest. They bust vandal and photographers, but they cant stop the spread of gangs,shootings, murders in the city.
